What is MOSAIC?

MOSAIC is the Multicultural Opportunity and Social Awareness Interest Community. It is an intercultural living environment that facilitates dialogue and learning about all aspects of diversity. We define diversity in the broadest sense to include not only race and color, but also gender, socio-economic status, ability, sexual orientation, religion, political views and other forms of difference.

How will this community benefit me?

The nature and type of this community will strongly enhance students in terms of their understanding of different backgrounds but also an awareness of the importance of community and dialogue. As a member of MOSAIC, you wii be exposed to an environment that bridges the academic and residence hall environment. Since students take a common class together this helps create a true learning community.

How does this fit into my academic goals?

Members of the MOSAIC community will take the 3-credit fall semester course (A/F) that will provide a foundation in diversity studies and cultural competency. The course will be taught by faculty members from Africana Studies and the Center for Race and Social Policy.

The MOSAIC course will also count towards the completion of the University Liberal Education Requirements.

The MOSAIC course will provide a valuable stepping stone in your academic and professional careers in order to:

  • Develop the cultural competencies that employers and graduate school committees are increasingly seeking.
  • Meet faculty across academic fields.
  • Acquire leadership experiences and a voice on campus.
  • Participate in service projects and make ties to the community around you.
  • Become part of a supportive student network.

Where is MOSAIC located?

MOSAIC is located in Slusher Tower, and be housed on the first eight floors. Slusher Tower is a co-ed facility.

For whom is MOSAIC geared?

It is geared toward all students. We want students that would be interested in engaging in dialogues about social justice and diversity. This provides a valuable opportunity for students to learn about diversity, or to further their understanding.

What will the community look like?

It is designed to be a mix of current students and new freshman. The goal is a 50/50 mix so that we can use the current students as mentors for the new students. We see as being a valuable aspect in building the community.
